Angel Silvestre Diaz Morales
Angels Silvestre (b. Guayabal, Cuba 1951) is a central figure in the local history of his region. A versatile artist in many media. Silvestre has been a major cultural force in his hometown where he fosters generations of youth and artists to celebrate art and art making in Bauta and nearby districts with public art projects to revitalize and transform their town’s architecture to its historic luster.
Silvestre studied under the noted Cuban artist, Ricardo Gomez Armador. He also studied at the Bellas Artes Academy in San Alejandro, where he focused on technical and architectural drawing and the study of economics. After leaving school in the early 70’s, he worked for the state and dedicated himself to jobs related to architecture. He also served in the military in Angola, when Cuba provided support during on of that country’s civil wars. In the late 80’s he suffered a heart attack. Post recovery, he rededicated himself to the passion of his youth artistic creation: painting, engraving and sculpture. Silvestre’s narrative includes symbols referencing an African derived cosmos and mythology, punctuated by totemic symmetry. |
